Travelling with our aeroplane-friendly Wheelchairs:
Rules and Regulations
When planning air travel with a See Dream aeroplane-friendly Wheelchair, it’s essential to be aware of the regulations set forth by airlines and relevant authorities in South Africa while maintaining compliance with international standards.
Booking and Notification:
- We recommend that you inform the airline about your wheelchair at the time of booking. This allows the airline to make necessary arrangements and accommodations for your specific needs.
- Notify the airline at least 48 hours before departure to ensure smooth handling of your equipment. Most airlines in South Africa have specific procedures for passengers with disabilities, including those requiring mobility aids.
Battery regulations:
- Typically, airlines require that batteries be securely attached to the device or disconnected and packed separately. This is for safety reasons and to prevent accidental activation during transport.
- Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in mobility devices, have specific rules due to their potential fire risk. Check with your airline regarding their policies on lithium-ion batteries.
Documentation:
- Carry documentation for your Wheelchair, including manuals, and any necessary medical certificates.
Check-In and Boarding:
- Arrive early for check-in to allow sufficient time for processing your equipment.
- Airlines usually provide assistance from check-in to boarding for passengers with mobility needs.
Insurance Coverage
- Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers your Wheelchair.
- Coverage Details: Ensure your policy includes loss, damage, or theft of mobility devices.
South African Airline-Specific Policies
Each airline in South Africa may have slightly different policies regarding travelling with wheelchairs. Some of the major South African airlines are:
South African Airways (SAA):
- SAA provides assistance to passengers with disabilities and offers priority boarding.
- Passengers should notify the airline at least 48 hours before departure.
- Batteries must be disconnected and terminals taped to prevent short circuits.
British Airways (operated by Comair):
- British Airways advises passengers to inform the airline at least 48 hours in advance.
- Batteries must be securely attached to the wheelchair, or disconnected and terminals taped.
Mango Airlines:
- Mango Airlines requires passengers to notify the airline at least 48 hours before travel.
- Batteries must be disconnected, terminals taped, and the device secured in a wheelchair bag or protective covering.
Travelling Internationally
We advise that you check with the specific airline for any updates or changes to their policies before your journey, however, you can use the below as a general guideline:
- Always inform the airline in advance about your wheelchair to ensure proper arrangements.
- Secure any loose parts and remove personal items before check-in.
- Arrive at the airport well in advance of your flight to allow ample time for assistance and boarding.
- Consider labelling your wheelchair or mobility scooter with your name and contact details.
Travelling with Lithium-Iron Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries, known for their lightweight design and high energy density, also come with a heightened risk of thermal runaway and fire. When preparing to travel with these batteries, it’s crucial to adhere to airline requirements aimed at ensuring safety.
Airline Regulations:
- Airlines typically impose a maximum watt-hour (Wh) limit for lithium-ion batteries, often around 300 Wh. Additionally, passengers may be allowed to carry one spare battery up to 300 Wh or two spares, each up to 160 Wh, though these limits can vary between airlines.
- Passengers are generally required to carry these batteries in the cabin as part of their hand luggage, rather than placing them in checked baggage.
- Batteries should be removed from the device and protected against short circuits, often by covering the terminals to prevent accidental contact.
- If a mobility device is being checked, it must be safeguarded against accidental activation and potential damage during transport.
